I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who left such kind and sympathetic comments about Harry’s passing. It really did help Husband and me to feel less alone at such a sad time and it also warmed our hearts to know how many animals lovers there are out there. Truly, thank you so much.

We’re doing much better now. As I said to someone recently, time may be an enemy to my face and body but it certainly is a friend when I need help dulling the pain of heartache. It still hurts to think about Harry but we can’t help but think about him, especially because we keep thinking we see him out of the corner of our eyes. Is that some weird phenomenon that happens when someone dies?

We thought about Harry a lot this week because we got the first snow of the season Thursday night and Harry liked the snow. Or at least didn’t mind it. We kept thinking how excited he’d have been to go outside Friday morning and see the thin white blanket that had settled over the garden during the night. Poor Harry. He only had one winter in his short life.

To us, the snow was pretty but seemed to come a bit early in the year; we couldn’t remember it snowing before Halloween in the 4.5 years we’ve been here. It’s supposed to warm up later this week and even rain tomorrow night, so we still have time to enjoy the nice fall colors before winter really hits.

Husband and I used the bad weather as an excuse to get a couple of household chores done, including putting up some wallpaper we picked out a month ago. When we moved into our house, we wanted an “accent” wall all in our sitting\dining room, so we painted one wall dark red. We like color and liked the red but it was too dark for the room, so we thought we’d change it up with some colorful wallpaper. After a lot of searching and testing, we decided on this:

As I said, we like color and we really did think this pattern would work in the room. The background color blended nicely with wall color and with the tile behind the wood oven in the room, and didn’t (we hoped) clash too much with the dark wood floor.

We were totally wrong!

As soon as we finished gluing the last strip and stepped back to admire our work, we realized it was all wrong. The pattern is too busy, the colors not quite right. It doesn’t look right next to the tile and especially doesn’t go with the old-fashioned look of the wood walls in the hallway off the sitting room. It is, unfortunately, a big decorating mistake.

I was disappointed, to say the least, more so because it's just the latest in a string of decorating mistakes I’ve made in the house ever since we moved in. Honestly, the work I’ve done in most of the rooms in our house (i.e. paint color, curtains, furniture) makes me unhappy and it seems like whatever I try to do to fix it doesn’t work either. Ugh. I’m not so talented in the decorating/design department---I have a lot of trouble picking out clothing, too---and starting from scratch the way we did with our house has been a huge challenge.

But what can you do? I have a couple of friends who love decorating and have offered to come over and help me with ideas and advice but---this is stupid, I know---I’m too embarrassed to show them what I’ve done so far. I’ll work on getting over that, since I obviously need help and it should be fun, right?

In any case, the wallpaper is coming down. It really is a shame because it was expensive, it was a bitch to put up, and it’ll be a bitch to take down, but it must be done. It’s one thing to make a decorating mistake; it’s another to force yourself to live with it because you’re too stubborn to admit it. And Husband and I are being positive about it; we’re already talking about picking out new wallpaper. And, on the bright side, we’ve certainly learned a lot through all of the mistakes. I'll focus on that and just keep trying. It's better to have tried and failed than to have never tried at all and all that, right?

You can't go wrong with Britney posters. Really.

I think that a really big print would look amazing...I'm not so talented, but I remember seeing a Trading Spaces a few years ago where Doug found a picture he loved, put it on a transparency & projected it really big onto the accent wall, then he traced the design and painted it. It looked amazing, but again, way beyond anything I could do. If it makes you feel better, I can't even put up wallpaper...hell, I can't even take wallpaper down! Good for you for being brave enough to experiment! Emily

Can I help? After seeing my place you probably wont be interested ;) I think you are right about the wallpaper - take it down. I will call you for a chat xoxo

Hey Liz. I may not be all that when it comes to decorating but I'm pretty sure Britney anything would be wrong. Makes me want to see your place, though. :-)

Hi Emily! I love those design and decorating shows! Clearly they haven't taught me anything but I do love them. It was an English DIY show that got me thinking about wallpaper in the first place. Maybe I should stop watching them? ;-)

Hi Jo! I definitely should have had you over when you were in town---you could have helped me avert the wallpaper disaster. But, hey, I guess I should feel a bit okay in that I may not know how to get it right but I certainly know when I got it wrong! That's something, eh? Your house is gorgeous, what are you talking about??

I say leave it up for a while. It may grow on you.

I should send you some pictures of the wallpaper my mom has put up. I would never have chosen it, but it really looks great.

Don't be afraid to be bold!

oh Chris, that is not going to grow on anybody.

Well I like it! It goes well with the beautiful wood flooring and the white skirting boards/door frame. The only thing it doesn't work with IMHO is the wall-tiling. You have to live with it of course but I wouldn't rush in stripping it again. It's really rather cool in the photos at least; the seventies thing is very much back a tthe the moment. I'm not saying that it wouldn't be nicer with a bigger print - it probably would be in the long term - but it's certainly not as awful as you (and some of your readers) think.

Hi Chris! Thank you for your comment and for the pictures---your mom has done some really pretty things with wallpaper. You're very right about how the small patterns look great in a small space. I think I'll follow that thinking---and Emily's suggestion---and go with a big pattern of some kind on that wall. Can't wait to go shopping now!

Jill, LOL! It's such a shame, realy, because I absolutely love the paper. I love the colors, the texture, the whole thing. Just not the way it looks in the room. I have a little bit of it left and I might use it to make a "picture" for a wall in a different room.

Hi J! Thank you! Especially for saying you like our flooring. We go hot and cold with that flooring but mostly I try to like it. It's been turning red in the sun and we're not crazy about that... Like I said to Jill, I love, love, love the wallpaper but not the way it looks in the room. We should have put it up on the wall opposite, on the other side of the sitting room, as it might have worked there. Dang! Well, live and learn. Really appreciate you saying you like it.

Hey Michele! I love the wallpaper too. Hang on a bit before ripping it down. There may be hope in finding a wall hanging to tone down or tie in the effect with the rest of the room.

I agree with Irish Nomad. In the photos it looks great! It's a busy wallpaper yes, so maybe seeing it in real life would give a different opinion?

It's great that you dare trying patterns - most people always go for the same boring plain walls.
