13 August 2011

One evening this past week, maybe Monday, Husband and I were enjoying the water at Asnes, the rocky little beach where we like to go swimming. Later, as we sat drying in the warm breeze, I stared out at the sun glinting off the water and thought, “Hmmm, the sun looks, I don’t know, different… A little lower in the sky, even from just a week ago… It feels like…autumn. It can’t be!” Husband said, “Yeah, I know what you mean, but it’s too soon, too early to be autumn.”

But the signs are here… The sun is lower, and it’s setting earlier---it’s dark by 10.00pm now, an hour earlier (it seems) than just a few weeks ago. Our roof is often covered with dew when we wake up, a sign of how chilly it is now at night and in the morning. The cherries and raspberries are gone now, but the apples and plums are beginning to ripen on the trees, and the blackberries are coming out. I pulled on a little jacket before heading out on my bicycle to work yesterday. Yes, summer is coming to an end. Yikes!

Fall used to be my favorite season when I lived in California. Now summer is my favorite, but fall is a close second (spring is third, and winter is a distant fourth). So I refuse to bid farewell to summer just yet.

The weather was beautiful today, so we cycled out to the beach only to find it totally invaded by jellyfish. Bummer. No swimming today.

Hopefully, the current will change and the horrible creatures will disappear before the water gets too cold for swimming. In the meantime, we’ll try some other beaches or just enjoy our garden, where we will not be alone. Check out the adorable family that has been visiting us:

So now they're an adorable family, huh? ;)

I know what you mean about fall in the air. It was warm and sunny the other evening, but there was something about the breeze--it was cool and crisp, and not warm--that felt like fall to me. I want to kick and scream--I feel like summer just barely arrived here. You wrote the other day that this was the best summer you've had in Norway in 5 years. We've had the rainiest summer EVER (per reports) and I've found it quite miserable. Here's hoping for another few weeks of sunshine and warmth (especially since my brother is visiting, beginning next Friday)!

Let me know if you make it up to Hamar!

I hope, I hope, I hope a miracle comes and we manage to have an Indian summer. But yes, I pulled on my "fall" cord blazer the other day before taking Max for a walk and thought, isn't it a bit early to be wearing this? Sadly, no. I'm not ready yeeeeet!

BTW, your deer family is gorgeous! I hope it's a long fall so the fawns and everyone else can get nice and plump for winter.

Fall is in the air in Trondheim too (and if I recall correctly, it was August 8 when I felt it in Bergen). Funny how you speak of the nights getting dark - I think the days are still longer here than on the longest day when I lived in Canada, but yet I feel the same way as you "noooo the darkness is coming!" Funny how perspective change after living in the north for a while:)

@canadian i norge, I know what you mean. It's definitely starting to feel like fall in Trondheim.

Already it seems colder and darker. Maybe it's just me, but looking back, it seems like I can only remember bad weather here this summer with the exception of a few days with sun. I'm stuck with the impression that this has been a truly miserable summer and that I understand those who travel far abroad to catch some sun just a little bit more.

And what's with the flooding and all the rain lately? I'm not done with the summer yet!

Excellent photos of the deer. I would think that they were too shy to get so close to people during the summer, but it doesn't look like it.

@ Emily -- I'm sorry to rub our good-ish summer in your face. ;-) We've had our fair share of rain, to be sure, but not enough to ruin the summer, and the last week of July/first two weeks of August were pretty dang awesome. I do hope we all get a super September, because we need a "boost" before fall sets in. Enjoy your visit with your brother, and I will indeed get in touch!

@ Corinne -- it is too early for fall clothes, so I hope the cool weather goes back in its cave for a while. I love your wish for "plumpness" for our deer! We want the same (we may even put out a few carrots for them).

@ Jo -- we do, too!

@ CiN -- you're so right about our change in perspective! I'm trying really hard to concentrate on TODAY and not stress about winter coming but it's hard to pack down that worry. I SO understand now why Norwegians want to take off the entire month of July. :-)

@ Vidarp -- I guess July was the rainiest on record, or something like that, for most of Norway, so it's not your imagination that your summer has been crap. I read in the paper yesterday that Norway was able to sell a huge amount of electricity to other countries in July because some reservoirs were running over. Amazing! I hope our electricity prices are lower this winter.

The deer are very afraid of people; we've taken all of the those pictures from inside the house.
